The editio princeps of Saint Augustine’s De Civitate Dei

The editio princeps of Saint Augustine’s De Civitate Dei (Triv. Inc. A 96) was produced in Subiaco in 1467 by the early typographers Conrad Sweynheym and Arnold Pannartz in large volumes. It is noteworthy for the clarity and originality of the characters and the text’s airy layout on two columns. The Trivulziano exemplar stands out for its elegant ornamental motif of bianchi girari (white vines). This is an intended humanistic revisiting of a late Carolingian decorative element, characterised by complex and elegant phytomorphic spirals, embellished with gold leaf. The miniaturist of this exemplar has been tentatively identified as a collaborator of Jacopo da Fabriano.
